                          BIOGRAPHY ABOUT MARTA VIEIRA DA SILVA

Marta Vieira da Silva  is the most successful female footballer of Brazil.

She was the only female football player in Brazil to win Fifa´s Women´s Player of the Year Award,  five times consecutives: in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2010.

Marta is considered the best female football player of all time.

She played in the UEFA CUP final for the Swedish team Umea IK.  She was absolutely outstanding in the match against Arsenal Ladies, but her team lost.

In the World Cup in 2011,  the Brazilian players were eliminated by the United States in the knockout stage.

Today she plays for another team of Sweden. The name of the team is Tyreso FF.

            Marta was born on February, 19^th., 1986, in Dois Riachos, Alagoas, a small town of about 13,000 people, in a very dry region in northeastern of  Brazil.

Marta´s father worked as a barber, but Marta did not grow up with her father because he left her mother when the player was just a baby.

She has two elder brothers and a sister, and they all had a childhood very poor and very hard.  At that time, Marta did not have money to buy a soccer ball, so she improvised a ball by scrunching up plastic bags of paper.

           

                                                            James Crawford  is  the author of a book about  Brazilian soccer.
